A-Z Womens Center has been found in violation by not cleaning and decontaminating the suction machine and equipment between use on patients. BLOOD, DIRT AND DRIED SOAP WERE VISIBLE UPON ENTERING THE ROOM.
Industrial Commission of Arizona met June 6, 1996 to review violations and levy penalties on the charged companies. An abortion mill, one of a series owned by A-Z, was charged for contamination of their equipment in their operating room.
A-Z Womens Center, Inc., 1002 East McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85006 was inspected by OSHA on May 1, 1996. The inspectors found that the abortion mill was not decontaminating their suction machine and other equipment after each use.
The citation reads as follows:
"Citation 1, item 1 --Operating Room: The suction machine and the stand for a table were visibly contaminated with blood, dirt and dried soap and had not been decontaminated after use."
It was stated that there was no inspection history in the past three years.![]()
As this case was being reviewed, the pictures of the operating room, where the babies are killed, was passed from one member of the board to another. Some of the members present were: Chairman Gordon Marshall, Chief Council Anita Valanis, Vice Chairman Michael Standus, Commissioner Luis Rodriguez. We list several comments that clearly show the alarm the members expressed at the conditions at this abortuary.
"If the suction machine is not being decontaminated, isn't it possible that then they could transmit disease to another person? We are talking about the possibility of AIDS. I think this is very, very serious." Looking at the pictures taken by OSHA, Michael Standus continued, "That's blood!"
Another member stated, "They worry about blood everywhere else!"
"This is SERIOUS!"
"That's disturbing, that's REAL disturbing."
The members voted to charge the maximum penalty to the clinic allowable.
It is interesting to also note that when we called A-Z Womens Center in Phoenix, the person answering the phone would not release the name of the administrator. Gretchen Pacheco. She also refused to give any names of the doctors who 'work' there. Gretchen Pacheco, in the report she filled out for OSHA, admitted the charges listed as being true.

His Excellency Thomas J. O'Brien, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, on June 5th, met with pro-life coordinators from around the diocese. The main topic of discussion was the plans he had enacted for the sending of cards to the legislators to fight the Clinton veto on the PBA bill ban. All churches in the Diocese of Phoenix have been instructed to order and distribute cards which encourage the Representatives and Senators from the state to consider voting to override the veto.
This action is following the suggestions and directives from the National Council of Catholic Bishops. He had described his view of Rep. Pastor (D) from Arizona, in voting against the ban as "disappointing." He stated that the Hispanic community must communicate their concern over his vote against life.
All parishes are directed to call the Diocesan Office at 602-257-0030 to order the cards. The cards will be distributed at all Masses on the weekend of June 29th.![]()
