In the summer of l990 a good friend notified me of a special group that was meeting. The person invited me to keep an eye on Maricopa Council of Children and Youth (MCCYF) Teen Pregnancy Prevention Committee under the direction of Roger Lock at United Way, 1515 E. Osborn, Phoenix, Arizona.
She gave me a list of people attending this first meeting. Women from pro-life, chastity-teaching-only organizations like Unwed Parents Anonymous, Concerned Women of America, Ask Women Center and myself were in attendance. Pro-abortion activists Irma Montano, Planned Parenthood; Carol Riedel, Child Crisis Center East Valley; Judy Numbers, YWCA; Nancy Marshall, AZ Family Planning Council (Teen Pregnancy Coalition, Pinal Family Planning, Santa Cruz Family Planning (F.P.); Pima F.P.; Planned Parenthood of Southern AZ and Central and North AZ) composed the opposition. The pro-abortion supporters naturally stress teen contraceptives as part of their programs.
At the first meeting, Nancy Marshall presented an idea she had developed which included an informational handout bookmark which would serve as a service "referral" instrument.
I waited to see exactly what literature would be handed to the people attending the meeting. She handed us all a copy and there it was, the phone numbers; 1-800-833-4642 for Pregnancy Hotline and 258-2900 for Maricopa County.
On the bookmark there was a silhouette of a mother and baby entitled "Healthy Mother/Healthy Babies”. It read:
"For Contraception, call: County Health or Planned Parenthood from the Teenage Pregnancy Resource Coalition (Branches from AZ Family Council.)"
On the back of the bookmark:
"Could you become a Mom? Think about this:
I clearly stated to the group that this bookmark would not do because it was also for abortion referral. I let them know what I knew from prior experience. Naturally, all the pro-life groups attending the meeting also objected immediately.
Very soon there after, a letter came addressed to me saying there was enough people on this board and I was not needed since they were, get this, preventers. My answer was: "You are planners of pregnancy. I am a preventer." I stayed on anyway throughout the summer.
So, the Hotline numbers were publicized by phone book, TV, radio, and now school kids. Well, I thought, that was it. I would have to home-school from now on. But it didn’t end there.

Arizona's 1996 March For Life was a tremendous success and the largest since 1990! This event, which drew more than 5,000 people, according to the Arizona Capitol Police was under a newly-formed coalition.
Obviously, all credit goes to Our Lord for the fantastic turnout. Under new leadership, the coalition had approximately seven weeks to plan for the March.
There are so many people to thank for the smooth running of the event. There is no doubt though that Children of the Rosary workers should take a big bow. Without the determined, constant work of the group, too many deadlines would have been missed.
Behind the scenes, as the majority of people were preparing for Christmas, busy hands were writing, printing, folding, faxing and mailing fliers, letters, press releases and bulletin notices.
Many groups and church denominations volunteered their time and talents. Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien certainly is at the top of the list, participating, speaking and asking priests to encourage attendance of all Catholic families. The Catholic Sun ran two excellent articles covering the Rally.
We have more information on the rally in this newsletter but I wanted you to know - without the support of Children of the Rosary, we would not have had the Rally! Thank You!

Ever want to talk to your radio?
I certainly did when one national talk-show host (not Rush Limbaugh) recently was told that a listener wished the host would publish a conservative newspaper. The listener was sure to buy it.
The radio host replied that he had no interest in producing a newspaper; in addition to the program, he puts out a newsletter, as do other talk hosts, but that's it.
I wanted to exclaim, "Why don't you mention The Washington Times!?"
It's true that the newspaper medium is generally dominated by biased pro-abortionists and leftists while conservatives and pro-lifers more often find their voice on talk-show airwaves. There is, however, a major daily newspaper that pro-lifers really ought to read, rather than waste time with the local daily pro-abortion propaganda sheets.
The Washington Times is a full-size major daily newspaper published in the heart of the nation's legislative and judicial activity. It has constantly prodded an unwilling, uncaring media to look into the many political scandals of the Clinton administration. And The Washington Times publishes a host of pro-life news and opinion articles that you rarely find assembled in one package. One gets a different perspective on the news, and on pro-life developments, when reading this heartbeat from the nation's capital. Compared with The Washington Times, such pro-abortion papers as The Arizona Republic and The Phoenix Gazette are like reading just the comic pages -- good for a laugh, but not very informative. There are very few honorable exceptions in the Republic, like William P. Cheshire's column. But almost entirely the Republic, the Gazette and most other newspapers are written and edited by pro-abortion extremists, to please pro-abortion extremists and to dishearten mainstream pro-lifers. Trying to get an idea of where the nation stands by reading such superficial, biased newspapers is like trying to discover new stars in the universe by looking into a dark old cave.
You owe it to yourself to spend more time with a paper like The Washington Times, and a lot less time with the pro-abortion propaganda sheets who hate everything you as a pro-lifer stand for. If pro-lifer Suzanne has one neighbor who constantly screams insults at her, and another neighbor Suzanne likes and trusts, would Suzanne spend most of her time with the neighbor who screams insults at her? That's what Suzanne would do if she expects a paper like the pro-abortion Republic to keep her reliably informed.
Often people just take the daily paper for the sports news or grocery coupons or lottery results or TV listings. And that's fine with the newspaper's business department. As long as people pay for subscriptions to make the paper profitable, the business department may care less whether readers trust the paper. So it'd be nice if you could put the financial pinch on a paper like the Republic by refusing to subscribe to it, and asking a neighbor if you could have the grocery coupons when he's done with it. Or you may figure, like me, there are some items in the local daily paper you need to clip by subscribing yourself.
But The Washington Times is far more deserving of your time and money. It takes about a week to arrive in the mail. In addition to the full-sized daily edition, The Times produces a weekly tabloid-size edition with a selection of the week's stories. You can subscribe to the daily Times for 13 weeks for $43.75 by phoning 1-800-277-8500.
(By comparison, the Republic costs $44.20 for 13 weeks -- actually more money even though the Republic doesn't have The Time's postage expenses.)
Or, if you prefer to take the weekly The Washington Times, call 1-800-311-8353 for 52 weeks for $59.95.
Here's a good gift for someone else, or give this gift to yourself -- a pro-life daily newspaper that respects traditional values and reports the stories often ignored by an arrogant, out-of-touch media that prefers being "politically correct" to being honest.

"Britain: Landmark Ruling made by “second most important member of the judiciary in England and Wales” According to Lord Chief Justice Peter Taylor of Britain, “Murder or manslaughter can be committed where an unlawful injury is deliberately inflicted, either to a child in utero or to a mother carrying a child in utero.” However, this landmark ruling which redefines the law of homicide does not apply to abortionists. Justice Taylor was asked to review a case where a 27 year-old-man was imprisoned for four years for stabbing his expecting girlfriend. The baby died 120 days after his four month premature birth from the stab wounds. The original judge acquitted the man of murder. However, Justice Taylor the “second most important member of the judiciary in England and Wales” overturned the first judge’s ruling, making this a landmark ruling."

Reprinted from Abortion Report, November 27, 1995 after the story was reported by Reuter on November 24th.
Martin Haskell, abortionist from Cincinnati joined Women's Medical Professional Corp., abortion providers, in filing a lawsuit in response to the bill which will ban the partial-birth abortion procedure. It was information from Haskell that was presented on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. In those statements, he admitted that he had performed the hideous procedure for elective reasons, and not because the danger to the mother's life.

Davenport, Iowa has passed an ordinance similar to legislation now being proposed in Arizona. Minors will be required to have consent of parents before they can undergo an abortion.

There are several strong pro-lifers ready to compete for the seat of retiring Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R), from Kansas. Pro-life state Sen. Eric Yost (R), freshman Rep. Sam Brownback (R-02) and Rep. Pat Roberts (R-01) are all possible contenders.

Kansas GOP state committee, on January 27th, strongly adopted a pro-life plank, “The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. Kansas Republicans therefore affirm our support for a human life amendment to the United States Constitution, as stated in the national platform, and we endorse legislation to make clear the 14th Amendment’s equal protection applies to unborn children.”

Mr. Clinton agreed, on January 25th, to sign the $265 billion defense authorization bill even though it left intact provisions that would prohibit military hospitals from performing abortions overseas except in cases of rape/incest/life-of-the mother.

U. S. House of Representative Republicans had attached pro-life language last year to the foreign aid appropriations bill. The pro-life language would have blocked funding of international family planning programs. Under the new compromise, funding would be cut to $356 million, about 65% of last year’s level. But as a “concession” to pro-lifers, none of the new money could be released before July 1st, 1997 or until new authorization legislation is enacted by Congress. If lawmakers fail to act, the aid could again be parceled out, but at a slower rate than is customary.

"The January 22nd issue of THE STANDARD features an article by Americans United for Life legislative council Judith Koehler, entitled, “Abortion and Cancer.” Koehler notes that “quietly and with little notice from the press,” state legislatures have started requiring that women be informed of the cancer risk associated with abortion. In September, 1995, Louisiana became the first state to require that women considering an “elective” abortion receive information about the association between abortion and breast cancer, "known as the ABC link.” Montana has followed Louisiana’s lead, and the Pennsylvania's Legislature was “sufficiently interested” in the issue to commission scientific research. Koehler: “Already breast cancer is the most common cause of death among middle-aged women. Not surprisingly, its rising incidence has prompted legislation in more than a dozen states. ... Requiring women to be informed of an avoidable likely risk-factor for breast cancer "elective abortion" is in line with this trend It is also in line with contemporary standards of informed consent. ... There will always be some women who choose to undergo abortion even if it means their risk of breast cancer rises. But all women, especially the young, should be advised of current scientific knowledge, and doctors have the duty to warn them. Given the reluctance of the normal champions of patients’ rights to make this case, lawmakers should step in.” This information was provided by Steven A. Ertelt" infonet-list@prolife.org.

We have many inquiries on the sources we use for our boycott list of abortion-supporting companies. There are several excellent ones that you might consider supporting financially:
* Life Decisions International, P.O. Box 419, Amhurst, N.Y. 14226-0419
* St. Antoninus Institute for Catholic Education in Business, 4110 Fessenden St. Washington, D.C. 20016
During the past month someone described her way of boycotting. This has to be exactly what the pro-abortion companies would love you all to do.
This woman explained, "I think education is the most important, so after I shop at a boycotted store or eat at one of the restaurants on the list, I go to the manager and tell they that I do not approve of their position in supporting abortion."
This is unbelievable! What are you saying to that company? Your financial support of the products or services aids them in doing what you say you oppose. You are showing them your principles go as far as your mouth and no further!
If you want the company to listen to you, write them a letter saying you will not eat or shop with them and then ATTACH A COPY OF THE RECEIPT WHERE YOU DID SHOP OR EAT BECAUSE THE COMPANY DID NOT SUPPORT ABORTION! If "money talks" we should let our dollars scream out in defense of the unborn defenseless child! - K.S.
In recent months we have heard much lip service on the criticism of the entertainment industry. It already has been proven that family shows on TV like 'Home Improvement" are the most popular. Top viewing ratings spell monetary success. Then why does the entertainment industry insist on producing TV programs and movies that are rated obscene, violent and sexually objectionable? Bypassing the excuses the entertainment moguls hide behind, the simple reason is that they are consumed with forcing their hideous life-styles on us. They hope, through continued brainwashing, we will eventually accept these grotesque examples as the norm.
As pro-lifers, most entertainment on large and small screens are rejected. It is not uncommon for many Christians families to have turned off their idiot tubes. Once in a while though, a good movie or program comes along. The problem is that we are assaulted by the grotesque as we search for the uplifting. This search for decent entertainment was obvious when our family decided "to go to the movies."
We chose a double feature - two comedies. So far so good. Next we checked for the obvious - lack of nudity, foul language, violence and sexual scenes. Again these two movies PASSED THE TEST! The double feature chosen was "Grumpier Old Men," with Walter Mathou and Jack Lemon and the film, "Father of the Bride, Part II," with Steve Martin. One movie was great and the other was a miserable failure.
"Grumpier Old Men" contained the following: extra-martial sexual relations, not once but with three different couples in three different generations, the folks over 90, over 60 and a couple in their twenties. Crude language showed the low esteem the writer had of the elderly. A movie not to be seen.
"Father of the Bride, Part II," a sequel with the original cast was the movie we all hope to see. Good comedy, great moral messages but not too obvious and two couples who are excited about having a baby! The younger couple was the normal tale of newly-marrieds. It was the mother and father of the bride where I held my breath. I was braced for the discussion of the dangers of a mature woman having a child, the question of abortion, their loss of freedom, the cost of raising a child in 'this horrible world.' We were pleasantly surprised and truly enjoyed the movie. It could easily be named the "Pro-life Movie of the year." - K.S.
