These young brothers watched us for several weeks from across the street as we prayed in front of an abortuary. Though baptized at birth, they had received no further religious educaton. Within weeks of joining, they knew the rosary by heart and we were allowed to sign up both boys for religious classes!

FROM THE MAIL BAG

We received an interesting letter from a pro-lifer who attended the march and was concerned with the lack of media coverage. The letter, well written expressed many of the phone calls that Children of the Rosary received:

Coalition For Life:

My wife Alice and I are winter residents of Chandler and parishioners at St. Timothy's in Mesa.

I have attached a copy of a letter in which you might have some interest. The letter, which is pretty much self-explanatory, was written recently to The Arizona Republic. We were disappointed to get a card, last Friday, from the editor of the editorial pages, indicating that they were not going to print the letter. Isn't it amazing how the media always finds space for information about, or propaganda from, Planned Parenthood or the NARAL?!!

Hopefully, in the future, you may be able to find a way to push the Republic to cover the March For Life.

Sincerely,
Davis Berry
Chandler, Arizona

This letter was attached to Mr. Berry's correspondence.
Letters To The Editor
The Arizona Republic
P.O. Box 2244
Phoenix, Arizona 85002

On January 21st, my wife and I participated in, along with several thousand others, a March For Life from Encanto Park to Bolin Park and a Rally, at Bolin Park, featuring several speakers.

Upon reading the Republic this morning (the 22nd), we were appalled not to find one word of coverage of this event, sponsored by the Coalition For Life. We are winter residents in Chandler, but live in Massachusetts, the home of a newspaper called the Boston Globe. When at home, we, therefore, expect biased, or lack of, coverage of the Pro-life movement. We have, however, come to expect a little more balanced coverage in the Republic. It is ironic that, in your issue of January 20th, you were able to devote an entire article, by Pamala Manson, to the propaganda of the Planned Parenthood of Central and Northern Arizona and NARAL-Arizona Right To Choose. What we find even more ironic is that, in your issue of January 22nd, in the VALLEY & STATE section, your major article was headlined " 'We want wildlife protected' !" Does this show where your priorities are between human and animal life?

While on the subject of media coverage of the Pro-life movement, I would beg you to refrain from referring to us, always, with the term "anti-abortion." We are certainly opposed to abortion, but, much more importantly, we are for the protection of life in all stages from the unborn to death.

Sincerely,

Alice & David Berry
Chandler, AZ

THE INSIDE STORY ON THE MEDIA

By Katherine Sabelko

The March For Life, though organized quickly, had a major reach of time dedicated to deal with the media. In the term used, media, television, radio, newspapers as well as the Internet were concentrated on.

Press releases and phone calls were made. In fact, in some cases, two sets of press releases were sent out. Only the Christian radio stations responded to the press releases.

KFLR, Family Life Radio, 90.3 FM, gave Coalition For Life their total commitment. In fact plans had been made for them to broadcast from the Rally site. Though their radio personalities were suffering from the infamous flu, we were able to have radio spots on four different days as well as continuous reminders on their programs all week before the Rally.

KRDS Christian radio station, 1190 AM, also was wonderful to us, permitting us to advertise the Rally on their station and had several interviews. T.V. Channel 33 had an interview with Coalition For Life in Spanish. The radio station KFYI, 910 AM, was very aware of the Rally but we had heard only several brief notices of the Rally on January 20th.

The Catholic Sun, the Catholic Diocese newspaper, did a wonderful job of covering the March events. They not only had a good article in the paper before the Rally, quoting the Bishop's request that all Catholics should attend, if possible, they also had a reporter at the Rally. They definitely showed more professionalism than the secular papers.

KTAR radio station, 620 AM as with all of the rest of the media, had received a press release and a call but we never had a response. Needless to say, Pat McMahon, a radio personality and a Catholic, decide to have an 'on site' interview at Planned Parenthood because of Roe v. Wade Anniversary. So we know where Pat stands!

Obviously we knew that the media chose to ignore us. Television cameras were at the March, with Channel 3 (independent) and Channel 12, affiliate of CBS filming the marchers. No interviews were requested.

Since there were so many calls of complaint to The Arizona Republic, we were contacted on Tuesday, January 22nd. The reporter began the conversation with comments that indicated that they were under pressure to get a story out on the March. His first remarks were to give me a list of names to call to "remind" them of our activities in the future. He also acknowledged that they had received our press releases but that they "were mislaid."

Were we ignored? Yes! Will we do something next year to change this lack of response from the media? You bet. Will you enjoy being part of it? I think so!

We not only will be sending out press releases - many times - but will also have people assigned to call them until we do have interviews scheduled. Next year we will have enough time to have video and live copy for public service announcements.

We will need your help though. As you can see by the financial report, we spent a lot of money on mailings. For January 19, 1997, we need you to contact your churches, groups, parishes now. Let them know that this event will be taking place. They would feel terrible if other activities are scheduled on the same day! Next year the media will be there and, though we will plan on ten thousand people, we will be working on having 20 thousand marching for life!

BITS AND PIECES

Madalyn Murray O'Hair seems to be still missing, infamous for filing the lawsuit to stop school prayer. The Supreme Court in 1963, ruling on that lawsuit outlawed prayer in public schools. She has not been seen since August, 1995. The Internal Revenue Service is seeking almost $750,000 for back taxes. Many people believe it was when prayer was forbidden in schools, that the moral decay accelerated in this country and one of the many horrors that resulted from that decision was the legalization of abortion.

Chinese women seeking asylum in this country to avoid forced abortions in China are still ignored by the Clinton Administration. The Washington Times, December 25-31, 1995 reported in an article by Julia Duin, that Rep. Henry J. Hyde of Illinois would bring up the bill again in 1996. Hyde said "We are just ashamed our country under this administration refuses to do to the nearest humane thing by permitting these women their freedom in this country as refugees."

************************

Becky Bell did not die from the results of a back alley abortion, as claimed by the Planned Parenthood (PP) death machine and accepted as fact by The Arizona Republic. Medical records showed that she had died from another infection, left untreated. Once again PP has used women to further their agenda by having Becky's mother "admit" her daughter was pregnant and was not on good terms with her parents.

The Arizona Republic, January 20, 1996 reported on the Arizona's parental-consent bill, "Arizona state Rep. Tom Smith, (R) chairs the House Judiciary Committee that will hear the bill, says he favors parental consent." Pro-lifers are fighting the $2.5 million dollars, in the package, allotted to adult 'family planning' and for teen pregnancy prevention.

Pro-life feminists have some simple facts to give you:
* Double standards have always been used to oppress the less powerful. Real feminism rejects such attitudes.
* Polls show women, including many who support other women’s concerns, oppose abortion more strongly than men.
* Many problems women face worsened under legal abortion.
* Abortion advocacy has taken needed attention away from other important issues.
* Prominent early feminists advocated for greater female control over reproduction " but condemned the violence of abortion. In fact, Susan B. Anthony called it "child murder."

Pro-Life activist Mark Crutcher, Life Dynamics Inc., wrote the book, Lime 5. The book challenges the claim that abortion is safe for women by including documented cases of women who were mutilated, raped, sexually assaulted, and killed by their abortionists — all while pro-abortion apologists looked the other way.
