Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien joins Children of the Rosary in prayer. Whenever the priests and Bishop join a pro-life event, it encourages everyone to come together to fight abortion.

On the wall in Bishop Sheen's office hung a framed saying, by an unknown author:

You have no enemies, you say.
Alas, my friend, the boost is poor.
He who has mingled in the fray of life
Must have some enemies.
So you have never shot a traitor from the hip,
Never dashed a cup from perjured lip,
Never turned a wrong to right?
My friend, you have been a coward in the fight.

NO CONCESSIONS

By Katherine Sabelko

Seldom can you find an issue which is as clear and unambigious as the abortion issue. There are simply two distinct sides, life and death. Planned Parenthood represents the death mentality in our society. People become confused on the pro-life issue because of Planned Parenthood's (PP) cunning use of deceit. It is their conniving and deceptive approach that has gained them the financial support with which to exploit our children.

An excellent example of PP duplicity was in a recent Arizona legislative battle. A bill for parental consent of any minor's request foran abortion had been shelved for three years due to a moratorium by the House and Senate in Arizona.

The bill was reintroduced recently. It was straightforward and singular in issue. By the time back room deals were agreed on, Arizona ended up with three bills tied together. All three bills had to pass for the parental consent bill, the third bill, to be passed.

The first bill up for a vote was a family planning bill, calling for more than $1 million to go to family planning programs. It was worded clearly that none of the monies given to organizations like Planned Parenthood could be used for abortion or abortion referral. Only a naive person would not figure out that by simply shifting funds, PP would have that many more dollars to further the abortion agenda.

The second bill, on teen pregnancy prevention, with even more money involved, was just as deceptive. There were no clear statements of chastity-only teaching. Once again, condoms, "safe-sex" education and teens' lack of sexual control would overrule any Christian abstinence teaching.

Due to the total confusion and murky waters, the bills were not brought up for a vote. Arizona's pro-life legislators were smart enough to see the pit falls and did not compromise!

TOGETHER WE STAND

By Sue Widemark

Catholics are now the largest faith group in the world. We comprise large numbers in the US. Add to that the millions of Americans in Protestant, Evangelical and Mormon churches and you have a clear majority of voters.

There is one thing we ALL agree on: we need far MORE morality and less far of the Clinton regime of death.

If we all decided to back one candidate and even as many as 75 percent of us voted for that candidate, s/he would win by a landslide.

Single issue? Yes, I think it’s come to that, because, without morality, we are dying. How can we talk about 100 people who are unemployed when we are slaughtering 4400 babies daily?

FIRST, we need to stop killing human beings. Then, we need to learn to live in a more healthy manner. Reduce breast cancer by not allowing abortion; and teach about the dangers of birth control pills; reduce AIDS by teaching kids about the consequences of ‘free sex’; restore family values so kids might grow up and live. Our blatant lack of morality has become a death sentence for millions.

If we are not living a morally-correct life, we don’t have to even be concerned with government spending. Trust me.

Let’s all forget our doctrinal arguments and get together on our vote. If we did that, this country would be ours for the asking. Think about it.

DEXTER'S DESK

By Dexter Duggan

Is it fair to describe the prevailing sentiment at most of America's daily newspapers as not merely pro-abortion, but pro-abortion extremist?

For the answer, consider these thoughts by pro-abortion David Frum, writing in the December 4 issue of the Weekly Standard, the talked-about new national political magazine produced in Washington, D.C.

Frum took note of the "equally miserable" showings of the GOP's two strong pro-abortion presidential candidates, Arlen Specter and Pete Wilson, both of whom dropped out of the race well before the first primary election -- indeed, even before election year '96 arrived.

How can this happen when media pundits constantly assure us of majority pro-abortion sentiment in the Republican Party which only awaits a pro-abortion standard-bearer to lead it?

Frum -- himself pro-abortion, remember -- said that "pro-abortion Republicans" (to use his own term) see abortion differently than pro-abortion Democrats, who consider it "an inalienable right that women must possess in order to achieve their full personhood."

The Republicans, he said, take a milder view, that "on balance, legal abortion produces less human misery than outlawing abortion would."

He continued: "Pro-choice liberals think of abortion as a right equivalent to prayer: Any limit on it threatens women's fundamental liberty. Pro-abortion conservatives think of abortion as a right equivalent to advertising: it can be regulated in all sorts of ways before any important liberties are threatened."

Frum pointed out that currently "American abortion law must rank somewhere near China's as the most permissive on Earth," with abortion on demand throughout pregnancy, teen-agers having abortions without their parents' knowledge or consent, and on and on.

Frum said "there's plenty of room" to shrink legal abortion before it reaches "what pro-abortion Republicans regard as the core of the matter: the legality of abortion in the first ten weeks of pregnancy." As you read Frum's description of pro-abortion fundamentalists vs. pro-abortion "moderates," what other group of people came to your mind who have the attitude that abortion is an inalienable right essential to women's basic personhood, and that to limit abortion in any way threatens fundamental liberties?

Of course, the answer is media people.

The regular spin they put on a story about proposed regulation of abortion is that the Constitution is under assault from dangerous right-wingers.

The regular spin they put on a story about abortion is that, no matter how outrageous the particular abortion practice may seem to anyone else, it shouldn't be challenged or seriously questioned.

Even as the U.S. Congress examines the monstrous practice of "partial-birth" abortion, the media spin is that people shouldn't be questioning this, and the less said about it, the better.

Yes, the pro-abortion extremists dominate the media, just as they dominate Planned Parenthood and other radical pro-abortion groups. The only abortion they would have opposed was when their mother was pregnant with them.

PRO-LIFE HINT OF THE MONTH

Each month we provide suggested actions that you might like to try as a pro-lifer to help educate others about the horrors of abortion. Each area in the nation has different characteristics that set it apart from the others, with varied levels of acceptance of the abortion industry's death mentality.

Consequently, as you check out the suggestions we provide for pro-life activities, consider which will be most effective for your particular area.

This month our suggestions focus upon pro-life action opportunities to be found in the skyrocketing popularity of local and national radio talk shows, which cover an ever-widening array of topics.

Make a list of all radio talk show phone numbers, local as well as national. Have the shows listed with their mailing addresses, their on-air phone numbers and the station's general phone number. Many radio personalities now have their own voice mail, which will come in handy sometimes.

The best advise is to listen to the shows for awhile to find out the position the host has concerning abortion. Many hosts refuse to let any scriptural reading be done on the air, so always be ready to advance your statement both secularly and religious basis.

When any topic on the radio program begins to run toward life and death, population control lies, or violence, start dialing into the station. Never hesitate to express your opinion concerning the killing of babies. Without much strain, almost any topic can include facts about abortion.

One example is abuse toward women. Abortion is the main abuse towards a woman because, if she becomes pregnant and the man refuses to help her raise the child, there is tremendous mental, emotional and physical stress. Because abortion is legal and available in most locations, she is caught in an emotional, fear-based crisis.

Almost any topic will work.

Make the commitment to call. Remember, no one can see you and no one will know who is calling. This is a wonderful way to practice your speaking abilities with others on the subject of abortion. Just remember to speak calmly and sincerely.

You will accomplish several important goals by these phone calls. You will keep the abortion issue up front. Many shows refuse to discuss baby-killing as a topic for an hour. You will be speaking to people who might easily be affected by the facts you present. You will be bringing up the topic that could easily be discussed by those listening at home or in their cars. You will definitely catch people off guard and they thus perhaps will listen openly to your position.

If you hear offensive comments by a host about pro-life activists, the movement or even your religion, you will be able to contact the station manager or program manager within minutes on the comments. Many times the program manager will begin to monitor the host's remarks.

The most effective way to begin your "audio media campaign" is to let your friends know what your activity is so that if you get a call in, they can also call and reemphasize your position and add more facts to the discussion.

If you are still wondering if this idea is worth much, please remember that unfortunately, the pro-life movement has little in the way of advertising funds and little support from the press. Your statements will be a "free advertisement for life." Use the media - it will help save babies.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A little-mentioned medical substance that kills the pre-born baby is hypertonic sodium chloride solution. The product is sold for the use of burning the pre-born in the womb. The manufacturer is:

Baxter Healthcare, Route 120 and Wilson Road, Round Lake, IL, 60073.

Could the Children of the Rosary Newsgram readers be told about this product and the given the name of the manufacturer and where to write to convince them not to let this product be used for the killing of the babies?

These people should know that we will boycott all their products. The Chief Executive Officer is Mr. Vern Louckes. Mr Jack McGinley is President of I.V. Systems Group. Mr. Rick Knight is the Product Manager of this ghastly product against the unborn.

I called them at 1-800-422-9837 to voice my objection and their need to remove the product. I hope others will also call. Thanks for your help!

Ed. Note: Hopefully our readers will pick up their pens and get those letters out to the company and won't forget to pass on this information to their friends so they an write and call also!

I would like to say God bless you all! You are doing a great job fighting to end abortion. I just received my first issue of your publication - best I have seen on a state level.

I am sending you some names and addresses of some of my relatives. I think once they read one of your Newsletters, they will become more active in the Fight For Life!

Thanks for the info on the abortion "package." At least something on the subject was finally discussed by the AZ legislature. I hope this won't be the end of the discussion.

You know, I might as well be a thousand miles away from Arizona here, so little do I know of what's going on there, especially with respect to pro-life issues. There's a public library down the street. Guess I'll have to get down there once in a while to check out the Republic.

I took your advice and ordered a subscription to the Washington "Times." This campaign is too interesting.

AROUND THE WORLD

The People's Republic of China has decided to enforce its one-child policy in Tibet, according to a report filed by the Tibetan- Woman's Association, a UN recognized Non-Governmental Organization working inside Tibet.

"Birth control policy is forced ... repressively on the population of Kham and Amdo," the report said. "Mobile birth control teams comb the countryside and pastoral areas where they round up women for abortion and sterilization. Even women well advanced in their pregnancy are forced to undergo abortion, followed by sterilization.

************************

"Although China officially claims that its one-child birth control policy does not apply to 'China's minorities,' evidence shows that the policy implemented in China is applied on Tibet as well. Young women with one or no children are routinely sterilized. Vasectomies are forced on Tibetan men. No women under 22 years are allowed to have children. Thereafter, they can have a child only with a birth permit from the authorities. Then there are various subtle birth-control policies, such as restrictions on who may give birth, at what age and where, and fines up to 2000 yuan (US $400) for 'illegal' children and incentives for one-child families, etc."

************************

According to one Tibetan doctor who has since escaped to India, Chinese birth control teams operate all over the country. "The Teams have a monetary incentive to do abortions and sterilizations on as many women as possible. The more names the Chinese doctors collect, the more money they get from their government, as well as from the unwilling victims."

ROUND THE NATION

Michigan voters had approved a law in 1988 which limited abortions in Medicaid cases. The only abortions which had be allowed were in cases of rape or incest. January 16, The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the state. The Court stated, “It is clear that if Congress wished to grant states the right to refuse to fund abortions for rape and incest victims, it could have done so explicitly in the 1994 Hyde Amendment or another bill.”

************************

Nebraska has suffered another loss in their fight for life in the courts. The Supreme Court refused to consider the state's latest argument. The report in Lincoln Journal-Star stated that the state was opposing the federal mandate requiring Medicaid- funded abortions for poor women in cases of rape and incest.

************************

"The Court’s decision is the final one in a string of court losses for the state in its two-year challenge of the mandate. The decision means that now NE cannot deny Medicaid funding for any abortions that fall under the federal guidelines. In ’93, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment requiring the states to pay for poor women’s abortions in cases of rape and incest, as well as to save the life of the mother."

************************

The Lincoln-Journal-Star on January 17, quoted pro-life governor Ben Nelson: "It is an unfortunate ruling although not altogether unexpected given how the high court has ruled on this issue in the cases of other states which sought to challenge interpretation of the Hyde Amendment. It was on the basis of assurances from the Attorney General that Nebraska had strong legal footing that the lower court ruling was appealed to the Supreme Court” Governor Nelson has not given up yet though, and is reported to be seeking other legal actions.

************************

New Jersey will have an opportunity to elect a pro-lifer. Richard DuHaime (R) will face two abortion supporters, Dick Zimmer and Robert Torricelli. New Jersey Right To Life endorsed DuHaime, stating, "...Richard DuHaime supports progressive public polices and constructive solutions which will protect and enhance the life of both the expectant mother and her unborn child."

************************

Alaska might soon be released from the liberal Republican, Ted Stevens who has been a Congressman since 1968. The pro-abortion supporter will be challenged by a 43-year-old millionaire. David Cuddy (R), the pro-life millionaire businessman, will face off with Stevens in the August primary.

************************

California's Supreme Court has accepted a parental/judicial permission case. The legislation, requiring minors to have a parent's or judicial permission to undergo an abortion, became law but has been struck down by lower courts.

************************

Wisconsin's Joint Judicary Committee sent a recommendation to pass a pro-life bill to the Wisconsin Senate, concerning a 24-hour waiting period in abortion cases. The bill that will be considered requires a woman to wait 24 hours before she has her child killed.
