Finkel is a local Arizona abortionist who actually stands outside his office with signs advertizing "good" abortions. This picture alone shows the lack of caring for women, for babies. He brags about carrying guns and wears a bulletproof vest. He knows there is nothing to fear from the pro-life community. What this man does realize is that we want him to change from a baby-killer to a good doctor. We are praying for him. The only thing he should fear is the loss of his immortal soul. Please keep praying for him.

On the wall in Bishop Sheen's office hung a framed saying, by an unknown author:

You have no enemies, you say.
Alas, my friend, the boost is poor.
He who has mingled in the fray of life
Must have some enemies.
So you have never shot a traitor from the hip,
Never dashed a cup from perjured lip,
Never turned a wrong to right?
My friend, you have been a coward in the fight.

We posted this saying again because of the important message it conveys.

THE DECISION

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down a Washington state law which bans doctor-assisted suicide. This ruling also automatically supports the Oregon initiative for euthanasia.

March 6, 1996 might be remembered with the same sorrow that pro-lifers view January 22, 1973, the day Roe v. Wade was decided in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has earned a reputation of not only ruling in a liberal fashion but against the clear statements which are found in the U.S. Constitution. The judges stated that the constitution protects the right to die, and declares that medical doctors are legally allowed to aid people in self-murder.

Justice Stephen Reinhardt stated the following in his decision: "A competent, terminally ill adult, having lived nearly the full measure of his life, has a strong liberty interest in choosing a dignified and humane death rather than being reduced at the end of his existence to a childlike state of helplessness, diapered, sedated, incompetent."

Weston Smith, Anti-Euthanasia Task Force spokesman stated, "I think the founding fathers are turning over in their graves tonight. What this court has said is that the state can divide people between those whose lives it cares about and those whose lives it doesn't care about."

One person, relieved with the decision, shows just one serious flaw. Jeff Fenston, an AIDS victim in San Francisco, California, states that he detests taking pills for his disease. Now he says he will not have to worry that his doctor will not be able to assist him, when he can't stand taking pills anymore. During an interview, Jeff Fenston was clearly mobile, walking around his garden during the taping.

So do we add pill-taking to diapering? Where does this end? Who will be able to protect those older people who are injured in car accidents? This is a very serious blow to the moral structure of this country. We have now gathered speed on the immoral downward slope on which the courts are taking this country.

We truly are not far from the legal thought process that will state that any person who does not have a contributing-to-society life-style may be disposed of. The elderly could be eliminated on the request of their financially responsible family members because they are a burden. God help us all.

THE INTERVIEW

By Katherine Sabelko

In an interview in Phoenix, Arizona, pro-life lawyer John Jakubczyk was asked how the decision of the Ninth Circuit relates to the abortion issue and the right-to-life agenda. He stated, "We are concerned about the life issues. The life issues include those at the dawn of life, dealing with pregnancy, dealing with the birth of the child, dealing with the life of that child, those dealing with the protection of children, those who are handicapped, those who would just as soon eliminate the handicapped and disabled. So we are concerned about those as well. And also those who are in the twilight of life and those who are sick and those who are dying. We are advocates to protect those individuals and to preserve the dignity that they have as human beings and not allow some utilitarian ethic to come forward and decide that these are lives that have no value, that these are lives without meaning."

Jakubczyk explained the clear link between the Supreme Court decision in 1973, Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion to the moment of birth and this decision of the right to assisted killing. He stated, "The judge who wrote the decision said, 'We have precedence in Roe v. Wade and in the Casey decision in order to come to this conclusion.' "

Jakubczyk noted, "The judge cited and used Roe v. Wade as a model, using an historical model of suicide. The judge misstates history and then he comes to the conclusion that it is guaranteed in the Constitution somewhere that you have a right to die. Death is inevitable. We will all die eventually."

Jakubczyk continued, "This is social engineering at the judicial level. This was not voted upon. This was not decided by people. This was something decided by a group of judges, whom are either elected or selected but allowed to serve for life. These individuals are restructuring fundamental questions that long been understood as basic to society and that is that we don't have doctors killing people."

PRO-CHOICE ADVOCATES ADMIT DANGERS OF BIRTH CONTROL PILL

By Sue Widemark

Barbara Seaman is Pro Choice and thinks the sexual revolution is great, however, she admits evidence is overwhelming that the birth control pill is dangerous. She has written a book called The Doctor's Case Against The Pill which candidly discusses the serious side effects of oral contraception, Norplant and IUD - information which, previous to the book, the public only heard from Catholics and other 'religious radicals;' Information such as the fact that those on the pill have a 40 percent greater chance of stroke and heart attack and, of course, the real danger of breast cancer, which previously was an obscure disorder, but now claims one in eight American women as victims.

Seaman recently appeared on a talk show hosted by another pro-choice woman who, obviously on the pill, became rather uncomfortable when Seaman detailed the risks involved with taking oral contraceptives.

"But," said the host, "the pill changed life for women as they became sexually liberated and able to have careers and care for themselves financially. " (I never did figure out how the ability to indulge 'in promiscuous sex, liberated' women!). She continued, "Besides, isn't it true that it's more dangerous to become pregnant than be on the pill?"

This argument is, in fact, the one used by the medical profession, which doesn't bother to tell women about how they just might ruin their health by taking the pill. But, Seaman put it to bed quickly. She said it was not more dangerous to become pregnant and that the doctors were likely in cahoots with the drug companies who were making millions off oral contraceptives.

At this point, one might wonder what Seaman suggested for birth control since she obviously believed in the necessity of promiscuous sex. Seaman said that condoms were ineffective and not comfortable therefore she suggested that women use "barriers" (i.e. shields etc.) with a backup of abortion. "After all," she said, "now that abortion is legal, it's very safe!"

Trouble is, large studies of thousands of women in several parts of the country have shown that abortion causes even MORE breast cancer than the pill. As I watched her make her suggestions, I wondered what will happen when she finds out that abortion is even more dangerous for the woman than the oral contraceptive?

And so, a question I asked myself 20 years ago, when considering the Catholic stand on artificial contraception, comes to mind yet again. That is, how is it, if God wanted us to use artificial contraception (as some Christians and sadly some Catholics continue to maintain) - how is it that, with all our high-powered science, man has STILL not come up with a safe and effective method of artificial contraception?

I suspect I will not receive the answer to that question in my lifetime, for, in using artificial contraception, a woman is messing with a sacred system, given to her by God, i.e. the ability to bear new life in her womb, thus having the privilege (if she chooses this) of participating in the very Act of Creation with God.

LIFE IMPRISONMENTMENT - THE SALVI DECISION

By Katherine Sabelko

On December 30, 1994, Massachusetts Citizens For Life sent out the following press release:

"Massachusetts Citizens For Life [MCFL], which has repeatedly and unequivocally denounced violence as antithetical to the pro-life movement, vehemently condemns today's shootings at two abortion clinics in the Boston area. "We are absolutely heartsick at the news of these shootings," said MCFL President Madeline McComish. "We grieve for and are praying for those persons who have fallen prey to the actions of an obviously deranged individual, and we repeat: such acts of violence are completely opposed to everything the pro-life movement believes in and works for."

Madeline McComish responded to the report of the shootings immediately: "When a crime is so brutal, so appalling, it is perhaps only natural that the outrage of some people should swell beyond the limits of right reason and basic fairness, seeking a target of blame larger than the facts demand. Certainly that is what is happening now, as abortion advocates attempt to blame the entire pro-life movement for the actions of one isolated and obviously ill young man.

"Facts are the first casualty of such sweeping furor, so let us look at the reality of the pro-life movement versus the recent rhetoric TAB readers have heard. Among the most scandalous of recent claims: The gunman, John Salvi, is part of a violent conspiracy in the pro-life movement. Although known to express anti-abortion views, John Salvi is neither pro-life nor part of the pro-life movement. It would be an inherent contradiction for anyone who is genuinely pro-life to advocate killing as a solution to abortion. Those few persons who support violence are not representative of the millions of Americans who constitute the pro-life movement, and no truly pro-life person shares their shallow, dangerously flawed interpretation of principles regarding the use of force to defend one's own life or another's."

John Salvi, on March 19, 1996, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the killings at the abortuaries. He will spend the rest of his days in prison, with no possibility of parole.

In Arizona, Gloria Feldt, Executive Director for Northern and Central Arizona Planned Parenthood (PP), was interviewed after the verdict of John Salvi was announced. Unbelievably she stated: "Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech but nobody has a right to harm, harass, threaten or do physical harm to another person, and that's what I think we are trying to achieve and I hope this verdict again reinforces that message."

None of us have a right to do physical harm to another person, but that includes preborn children. General Counsel for Arizona Right To Life John Jakubczyk had the most honest direct statement on the Salvi verdict: "The pro-life movement is organized and has been created and has grown with the idea we are to protect life, not kill life. What happens in these abortion clinics is an abomination but it does not require nor is it permissible for those of us involved in the movement to respond to that violence with violence. It has always been a tenant of the pro-life movement, that we act peacefully and nonviolently. This individual was obviously suffering from a lot of psychological problems but the jury decided not to find him not guilty by reason of insanity."

All pro-lifers were shocked and saddened at the news last year that Salvi had gone on a shooting spree. We value life and mourned that anyone was killed in this violent method.

Everyone also knew immediately the damage that would be done to the pro-life movement in the short term. What everyone who is in the spiritual battle to end abortion must remember is the act of violence in an issue that has been contested for 23 years.

Our task is to continue to emphasize our peaceful determination to end the slaughter of the small children. Our task is to pray for John Salvi and the abortion providers - no one has the right to take another's life. Gloria Feldt apparently doesn't listen to herself!

PRO-LIFE HINT OF THE MONTH

It's time to get ready for Mother's Day. Ask your pro-life representative to have special remembrances placed in the church bulletin to pray that all mothers choose life.

This is also an excellent time to have a Cradle Sunday. A simple bulletin notice several weeks before Mother's Day could request church members start collecting baby clothes, food, toys and furniture.

A few people sitting at a Mother's Day table could collect the items for a crisis center.

This is also an wonderful day to have roses available for donations as a sign of respect for life.

FUN IN THE PARK

Please mark your calendar for May 11th. Plan on a fun-filled evening on Mother's Day eve. We will have a fund raiser ' fun & feast' event at North Mountain Park! Yavasupai Pavilion at 5 pm.

Coalition For Life is alive and well, but we need to raise money now for the March For Life in January, 1997.

This will be a great time to find out what some of our plans are. More information on the event will be in the next issue, but plan now to invite your friends and family.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Just wanted you to know that we appreciate your advertisers and use their services as often as we can.

I was instrumental in obtaining the services of the SHARKO CATERING CO. for two events of groups in which I am an officer, as well as one very sad event in February when SHARKO'S catered a dinner for my daughter after the death of her beloved husband.

We looked in your newsletter for caterers when we were planning our events, and have been very pleased with their services as well as their prices on all three occasions.

You are doing a great job of informing us on LIFE ISSUES - keep up the good work!

I'm confused! Your label showed that I was "Expired" on my mailings. Does that mean it was my last issue? I sent money in occasionally and love your publication. How do I ensure I stay on the mailing list?

Maggie Holts
Payson, AZ

Ed. Note: We have a brief explanation on page two of this issue on this question.

I am sending you some information of the dangers of vasectomies. To have a vasectomy is not only morally wrong, it's dangerous!

Connie Patterson

Ed. Note: We will cover the information you sent on vasectomies as well as a report on lowered sperm count in the next issue. Thanks!

I wish you all the best in the legal contests. My suggestion, off the top of my head, is that you continue to pray the rosary as close to the mills as you can legally get. The prayer is the most powerful part of your witness and effort, and will be effective (perhaps more so) if you are a million miles away. Also, the more unlikely your location, paradoxically, the more attention you are likely to draw to the cause of Life.

God love you,

Father Joe Blonski
Farmington, NM

Ed. Note: Amen!
