Pro-lifers in front of Planned Parenthood on Good Friday

Partial-birth abortion - the "gentler murder"

By Katherine Sabelko

Quiet murmuring among pro-lifers has risen in volume to become heated discussions on the value of the focus on the partial-birth abortion procedure. This killing technique has shocked and angered many Americans who were oblivious to the violence of abortion. Many pro-life activists, though, were well aware of the PBA method used [CoR July Newsletter 1993] in killing the children but question all the attention given to one method of abortion when all the procedures are so heinous.

Pro-lifers disagree on the need to continually highlight one horrid method of baby killing while seemingly ignoring the other methods abortionist use: dismembering (a gentle word), burning the child in saline, suctioning the baby out piece by piece, decapitation in the womb. All abortions are violent, murdering acts.

In a column by Tony Snow, There's hope for America on abortion, Arizona Republic, March 30, we perhaps see the fruits of all the work by Congress on this issue. Snow highlighted the year-long verbal battle by pro-life congressional members to ban the PBA procedure. Snow showed how the walls around the abortion providers fortress are beginning to crack.

While pro-life activists continued to howl because all the other methods of killing were being ignored, well-known legislators like Sen. Daniel Moynihan of New York were coming over to our side. He had stated on a Sunday morning ABC TV program, Meet The Press, in March, that the PBA procedure "was infanticide - baby killing." Though the comment was ignored by the show's host, Tim Russert, America heard it and they heard it from a pro-choice advocate.

Perhaps the abortion providers saw the writing on the wall before the pro-lifers did. Abortion providers' defense in backing the procedure was that if PBA were banned, other procedures would be challenged. What they did not say, but apparently knew, is that they would lose many of their supporters as the truth of abortion was continually discussed in public forum.

Pro-lifers need to be ready to expose more of the horrors of baby killing. Though the graphic pictures displayed on the streets, in the past, have been denounced by the general public, perhaps now those doors to the truth of the violence will be opened. There will be many more Americans seriously listening to the facts presented by pro-lifers.

Modern Calvary

By Ben Morgan
Coordinator for the El Paso Chapter

On Good Friday, March 28, His Excellency Armondo Ochoa, El Paso Reverence For Life Director, Fr. Rafael Garcia, and retired Msgr. A. James Milano joined the prayer group for the life rosary outside the Planned Parenthood abortuary, across the street from Reproductive Services abortuary at 730 E. Yandell Dr. in El Paso, Texas.

About 40 of the faithful were on hand to meet the bishop. His Excellency spoke of the need for lay participation and prayerful presence at the clinics. Following a reading from scripture, His Excellency led the first decade of the rosary. Two decades were prayed in Spanish. After the rosary, His Excellency blessed the prayer group before going to the other abortuary across the street.

On Holy Saturday, Fr. Richard Waywood joined the prayer group and led the rosary devotions. Fr Wayward will be with the group as much as he can - he has just been appointed to the hospital ministry in El Paso.

The El Paso chapter of Children of the Rosary prays the Life Rosary at 9 a.m. each Saturday at Reproductive Services abortuary at 730 E. Yandell Dr.

The Phoenix Area

By Katherine Sabelko

As Christians meditated on the suffering and death of Our Lord for the six weeks of Lent, they were also present at the abortion mills, our modern-day Calvary, to pray to end abortion.

Our annual prayer vigil on Good Friday at Planned Parenthood (PP), 5651 N. 7th St., apparently is affecting PP in a positive way. This year they instructed all their employees to park on the adjacent streets instead of using the abortion mill parking lots. They obviously were trying to discourage pro-lifers from stopping and praying by making parking spaces on the streets difficult to find.

We had over 100 people joining in prayer at the abortion mill and we had no complaints about the lack of parking in the area. What PP doesn't understand is that a short walk for us on the day Christ died is not an inconvience, but rather an opportunity to offer up the effort for the very people who are tryng to stop us.

The three-hour Vigil included 15 decades of the Rosary at noon, followed by the Divine Mercy Novena. Father Bob Blevin, O.S.C., then led the prayer warriors in an interdenominational meditation hour. At 2 p.m. we again prayed 15 decades of the Rosary.

As the main throughfare was clogged with traffic, people busy on their holiday shopping, they witnessed Christians on their knees at 3 p.m., praying to end abortion and honoring Our Savior Who died for our sins.

Abortionist Suspended

Sharon Hampton, 27, died January 9, after having an abortion of her 20-week-old pre-born baby. The cause of the botched abortion was internal bleeding caused by the perforation of her uterus.

She didn't die quickly. She slowly bled to death. Her last words were to her three-year-old son as she held him close: "I love you." Her mother stated those were her last words before slipping into unconsciousness.

The autopsy showed the baby's skull was left inside the mother, who also suffered a perforated uterus. The San Bernadino coroner's report stated Sharon Hampton's death "was a result of gross negligence as defined under Penal Code 190 and the manner of death should, therefore, be designated a homicide."

The abortionist, Bruce Steir, was already under investigation for alleged negligence in other abortion operations. Steir was quoted, immediately after the incident, "Whether there was negligence involved or not I don't know. I don't feel there was. But I am very devastated by the woman's death."

His attitude seems to have changed though, as reported in The Wanderer, Feb. 27, when he stated, "There is negligence, and there is gross negligence, and there is criminal negligence, and there are complications. I feel I'm in the category of a well-recognized complication of a second-trimester abortion."

On April 14th, the California Board will decide if his license to practice medicine will be permanently revoked. V

A Boycotting Win

Two responses were received by our diligent letter writer George Querre in regards to the support of Planned Parenthood. Both letters appear on page 10 in this Newsgram. A brief explanation of the responses are presented here.

Dana Corporation Foundation has declared that they no longer will donate to Planned Parenthood. Dana Corporation's operations include Dana Credit & Venture Capital, Diamond Parish, Parts Craft, Perfect Circle, Spicer, Victor, Warner Electric, Weatherhead, and Wix.

Please write to Mr. Southwood Morcott, Dana's Chairman of the Board, at Dana Corporation, P.O. Box 1000, Toledo, Ohio 43697 or call them at 419-535-4500 to:

  1. Thank them for their action.
  2. Encourage them to continue to stand for life each and every year.
  3. Communicate that if they are committed not to contribute anymore to PP, you will support their stand and their corporation.

It is important to not only encourage this corporation but to also gently put them on notice that they can not change their position every year.

When you receive a response, please consider sending CoR the original correspondence for our records.

The other letter is from a company concerning their position on supporting Planned Parenthood, came from American Express, a long-time boycotted corporation of pro-lifers. The letter once again shows that either the decision-makers are extremely ignorant of the actions and agenda of PP or they are being deceptive to the public.

The letter, shown on page 10, lists as a PP community action, teenagers performing skits for schools and groups. Far from instructing or guiding their peers in the virtues of chastity and good moral behavior, PP has the teens demonstrate how a girl can reject one boy but never states or encourages the teen to abstain from sex until marriage.

Anyone who would donate monies for PP to be able to mentor - a new politically correct term - truly is blinded by the facts clearly presented even in liberal publications. Who would allow this group to mentor to their child, knowing that PP is the major abortion-providing group that publicly fights to keep parents out of the decision of abortion for teens?

It is PP, at any program they present, supposedly to help parents and children to develop a better, closer relationship, that separates the parents from the children at the beginning of the sessions. Thus the child can be brainwashed and, oh yes, empowered, out of earshot of the unknowing parent.

We encourage you to respond to the statements presented in the letter when you write to C.E.O, Mr. Harvey Golub, American Express Company, American Express Tower C, 200 Vassey St., New York, NY. 10285-4710.

Several companies are now off the boycott list - Grand Metropolitan and Glaxo Wellcome but others have been added. Please try to avoid investing in the following: Banc One, Bankers Trust and Principal Financial Group.

We need you to continue to write to any company you deal with, asking what their position is on funding Planned Parenthood. Then, when you receive the correspondence, not only personally respond to it, but please forward it on to us so that we can publice the information to other pro-lifers.

To receive a complete updated list of companies that support PP, write to Life Decisions International, P.O. Box 907, Washington, D.C., 20044-0907. A donation of $25 for a year's subscription is requested. - K.S.

Mister Speaker

Rep. Henry Hyde's speech to Congress on partial-birth abortion on March 20, 1997

"1 thank the Speaker and I ask unanimous consent to revise and extend my remarks, and I beg of my colleagues the courtesy of not asking me to yield. I do not intend to yield. I have much to say and little time to say it in.

"Mr. Speaker and my colleagues, when you have a theme as large and as profound as ours is today, you need the help of great literature to describe the magnitude of the horror of partial-birth abortion. I suppose Edgar Allan Poe could describe it, but it's startling how the words of the ghost of Hamlet's father seem to anticipate our debate today: 'I could a tale unfold whose lightest word would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood, make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres, thy knotted and combined locks depart and each particular hair to stand on end like quills upon the fretful porcupine.'

"There's no member of this House who doesn't know in excruciating detail what is done to a human being in a partial-birth abortion. A human living creature is brought to the threshold, she is four-fifths born, her tiny arms and legs squirming and struggling to live. Her skull is punctured, the wound is deliberately widened, her brains are sucked out, the remains of the deceased are extracted. In the words of the abortion lobby, "The baby undergoes demise." What a creative addition to the lexicon of dehumanization.

"If calling an infant a 'fetus' helps you, if calling this obscene act 'intact dilation and evacuation' assuages your conscience, by all means do so. Anything is better than a troubling conscience. But you must know that the only thing intact in this procedure is a baby before, of course, the abortionist plunges his scissors, his assault weapon, into the baby's tiny neck. Then she's not very intact.

"Something was rotten in the State of Denmark in Shakespeare's great drama. Something is rotten in the United States when this barbarity is not only legally sanctioned but declared a fundamental Constitutional right. And while we're on Hamlet, who can forget the most famous question in all of literature, 'To be or not to be ... ?' Every abortion asks that question but forbids an answer from the tiny defenseless victim struggling to live.

"When this issue was debated in the last Congress, the President and defenders of partial-birth abortion claimed that the procedure was, now in the President's familiar euphemism, 'rare,' and that it was used only in times of grave medical necessity. All of us know now, as many of us knew then, that those claims were lies. They were lies. The Executive Director of the Coalition of Abortion Providers admitted on national television that he and those in the pro-abortion camp simply and flatly lied about the incidence of partial birth abortion, that this procedure is used only reluctantly and in extremism. It is not the case that these abortions are rare. It is not the case that this procedure is used only reluctantly and in extremism. It is not the case that this procedure is used in instances of medical emergency. Partial-birth abortion, infanticide in plain English, is business as usual in the abortion industry. That is what the Executive Director of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers told us.

"Is this House prepared to defend this proposition that infanticide is a fundamental constitutional right? Partial-birth abortion is not about saving life. Partial-birth abortion is about killing. Killing is an old story in the human drama. Fratricide scarred the first human family according to Genesis, but the moral prohibition of killing is as old as the temptation to kill.

"Most of the familiar translations of the Bible render the commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill.' A more accurate translation of the Hebrew text would read, 'Thou shalt not do murder,' which is to say, 'Thou shalt not take a life wantonly for the purpose of convenience or problem-solving or economic benefit, nor trade a human life for any lesser value.' The commandment in the Decalogue against doing murder is not sectarian dogma; its parallel is found in every moral code in human history. Why? Because it's been understood for millennia that the prohibition against wanton killing is the foundation of civilization.

"There can be no civilized life in a society that sanctions wanton killing. There can be no civilized society when the law makes the weak, defenseless and the inconvenient expendable. There can be no real democracy if the law denies the sanctity of every human life. The founding fathers of our republic knew this. That's why they pledged their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honor to the proposition that every human being has an inalienable right to life. Our Constitution promises equal protection under the law; our daily pledge is for liberty and justice for all. Where is the protection? Where is the justice in partial-birth infanticide?

"Over more than two centuries of our national history we Americans have been a people who struggled to widen the circle of those for whom we acknowledge a common responsibility. The slaves were freed, women were enfranchised, civil rights and voting rights acts were passed, our public spaces made accessible to the handicapped, Social Security mandated for the elderly, all in the name of widening the circle of inclusion and protection.

"This great trajectory in our national experience, that of inclusion, has been shattered by Roe v Wade and its progeny by denying an entire class of human beings the protection of the laws; we have betrayed the best in our tradition. We've also put in risk every life which someone, some day, some how might find inconvenient. 'No man is an island,' preached the Dean of St. Paul's in Elizabethan times. He also said, 'Every man's death diminishes me for I am involved in mankind.'

"We can't today repair all the damage done to the fabric of our culture by Roe versus Wade. We can't undo the injustice that has been done to 35 million tiny members of the human family who have been summarily killed since the Supreme Court, strip-mining the Constitution, discovered therein a fundamental 'right' to abortion, but we can stop the barbarity of partial birth abortion. We can stop it, we must stop it, and we damage our own humanity if we fail.

"Historians tell us we live in the bloodiest century in human history. Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot - a mountain of corpses reaches to the heavens and hundreds of millions of innocents cry out for justice. We can't undo the horrors inflicted on the human spirit; we can't repair the wounds already sustained by civilization. We can only say, 'Never again,' but in saying never again we commit ourselves to defend the sanctity of life. In saying no to the horrors of the 20th century, we solemnly pledge not to do murder because the honor of that pledge is all that stands between us and the moral jungle.

Mr. Speaker and my distinguished colleagues, we have had enough of the killing. The Constitutional fabric has been shredded by the unenumerated abortion license which, sad to say, includes the vicious cruelty of partial-birth abortion. The moral culture of our country is eroding when we tolerate a cruelty so great that its proponents do not wish us to learn the truth about this procedure. This Congress has been blatantly, willfully, maliciously lied to by proponents of the abortion license.
