WHO WE ARE

Children of the Rosary is now in its sixth year of dedication to fight abortion through prayer and presence at abortion mills.

CoR has a dual purpose: First, prayer at the abortion mills, legally, peacefully and prayerfully. Second, work to educate people about the truth of abortion, about the preborn child and the lies of the "Pro-Abort" agenda, by the distribution of CoR newsletters and flyers.

We are classified as an interdenominational nonprofit corporation with a 501(c)3 status. We follow the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. We welcome all people to join us in legal, peaceful prayer to end the horror of abortion.

We work with the blessing of our bishop, His Excellency Thomas J. O'Brien but we are totally separate from the Diocese. We have the blessing of the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix because we have always followed the teachings of the Church. We have worked within the legal system and attempt to continue to have working relationships with the police departments in the cities where we are active.

Children of the Rosary has been a positive action for respect for life. We concentrate on the abortion issue because of the millions of babies who have been murdered in the 22 years since abortion became legal in the United States. Abortion is the watershed that we must face. All other life issues deal with those who already have life. Preborn children constitute the only group that is not acknowledged to even be human and the only group that has no rights and no one to defend them. - K.S.

OUR BROTHER'S KEEPER

By Katherine Sabelko

A Gallup, NM Catholic diocesan paper, The Voice of the Southwest, related the following story from an article from Heritage House1.

"I lived in Germany during the Nazi holocaust. I considered myself a Christian. I attended church since I was a small boy. We had heard the stories of what was happening to the Jews, but like most people today in this country, we tried to distance ourselves from the reality of what was really taking place. What could anyone do?

"A railroad ran behind our small church, and each Sunday morning we would hear the whistle from a distance and the the clacking of the wheels moving over the track. We became disturbed when one Sunday we noticed cries coming from the train as it passed by. We grimly realized that the train was carrying Jews. They were like cattle in those cars!

"Week after week that train whistle blew. We would dread to hear the sound of those old wheels because we knew that the Jews would begin to cry out to us as they passed our church. It was terribly disturbing! We could do nothing to help those poor miserable people, yet their screams tormented us.

"We knew exactly at what time that whistle would blow, and we decided the only way to keep from being disturbed by the cries was to start singing our hymns. By the time that train came rumbling past the church yard, we could hear them no more. Years have passed and no one talks about it much anymore, but I still hear the train whistle in my sleep. I can still hear them crying out for help. God forgive us all who call ourselves Christians, yet did nothing to intervene.

"Now, so many years later, I see it happening all over again in America. God forgive you as Americans for you have blocked out the screams of millions of your own children. The holocaust is here. The response is the same as it was in my country - silence."

Every day in this country there are children being murdered by abortion for a variety of reasons. The majority of Americans are against abortion, which has been proven by a vast number of polls. The question is not why women have abortions. We have those answers. The question that needs to be asked is why more people aren't active in the fight against abortion.

Abortion is a main issue in today's world. People most admired and respected in the world, Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa, are strong, outspoken advocates of the defense of the preborn child. Many Christians don't seem to want to emulate their example, scurrying behind the misused terminology of "seamless garment."

The Church defined the term, "seamless garment," as a way to explain that all issues are woven together, interrelated and thus one can not be cast aside. In a Catholic Conference of Bishops statement in 1990, it was stated that abortion was a watershed issue in the seamless garment approach for, if a child is denied life, all other issues are mute. How can a person feed, shelter, teach or care for a child who has been killed?

A number of well-meaning people today have revisited the term and state that the issue of abortion is no greater an issue than the other issues. They are all woven together. Though this discussion seems a harmless, intellectual debate, it has given some misguided Christians an excuse to ignore the ministry to the unborn or the fight against abortion; a justifying explanation for the fault of being their brother's keeper.

The leaders of the Church could thus appear to be in conflict with its followers. Perhaps we should remember Jesus' affection and defense of small children or quick action to stop the stoning of a woman. Jesus would be at the abortion mills praying and offering help!

As Christians, we profess that we are our brother's keeper. If we choose to pass by abortion mills and never stop to pray and help, perhaps the clacking of those wheels from the train will echo in our heart. If we choose to bypass the fight against abortion for more comfortable ministries, we will hear the seamless garment being ripped at the foot of the cross!

RIGHT TO0 LIFE IS FUNDAMENTAL

By Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien

All the publicity surrounding Dr. Henry Foster's nomination for surgeon general, despite protestations, had much to do with the abortion debate still going on in this country. His nomination seemed to be flawed from the start.

The question whether this country needs a surgeon general (even the title is problematic) is a legitimate one. We certainly didn't need Jocelyn Elders.

The Catholic Church will not give up or reduce its opposition to abortion. Predictions were made years ago that euthanasia would become commonplace if people stopped valuing life. Our experience today tells us these predictions were not unfounded.

The right to life is a fundamental right and it must be upheld and protected. This right must be recognized by the citizenry of this country, and must enjoy security through law.

The Supreme Court should take note of what Gamaliel said in the Acts of the Apostles about Christianity: "If it is of human origin, it will destroy itself; if it is from God, you will not be able to destroy them (Christians)." Twenty-three years after the Roe vs. Wade decision, the argument about abortion continues. It is probably the most divisive issue in this country. The Court should recognize this and take corrective action.

The abortion mentality which has swept this land has much to do with the violence in our homes and streets and the general disregard for life itself.

The following story, however shows there still is hope which inspires us to continue or efforts against abortion.

No too long ago, while visiting a school, I was introduced to a young boy about five years old. I was told that I had met and spoken to his mother at another parish function at the time she was carrying this child and was considering an abortion. I was reminded that I and others had prayed with her so she would have the strength and courage to not terminate her pregnancy. She chose not to have an abortion. This was the little boy whom those prayers had saved. It was a moment I will never forget as this little kid looked up at me and said, "Hi, Bishop!"

Abortion can be prevented with support and care from loving family members, community and church. Women who are facing the tragic decision of abortion need to know they can receive help, assistance and support in choosing an alternative in favor of life. This is difficult in light of the campaign of Planned Parenthood, with its millions of dollars of public money, and other abortion industry supporters which attack and destroy innocent human lives.

We must continue and renew our efforts to preserve and protect the right to life for the young and the old alike. It is not morally acceptable to deny that right. This is a conscience issue for Catholics and others as well. There can be no other way, really, if we choose to follow Christ who came "that we may have life and have it abundantly. V

ROUND THE CHAPTERS

It is amazing how much is being accomplished by the CoR chapters.

The Flagstaff chapter praying in front of Planned Parenthood has grown. A group of people travel north from St. John Vianney parish in Sedona weekly to pray across the street from Planned Parenthood (PP). Since PP is in a shopping center, the pro-lifers have to stay across the street. Though the pro-lifers are not close to the mill, they report mothers changing their minds and keeping their babies. Catholic Renewal Center in Flagstaff does a fantastic job in supporting our group as well as selling CoR items. Thank you, Joan and Ted Edell, for all your work! Colleen Canter, our coordinator in Flagstaff, helps in Flagstaff and sidewalk counsels at the mills in Phoenix.

Prescott chapter is excited to report the wonderful support their new pastor has given the group. They truly miss Fr. Ralph Berg, C.M.F., who has accepted the position as provincial head of his order. Vickie Shuey is the CoR coordinator. They pray in front of the PP referral clinic as well as distribute literature and have special projects. They are working on a pro-life public-access cable program.

El Paso chapter coordinator Gerri Cuccaro has had to stop going to the Reproductive Services due to ill health. We will miss her! She has done a great job and was instrumental in our devotion to Divine Mercy becoming incorporated into CoR prayers at the mills. Ben Morgan has accepted the coordinator position. You have read some of his wonderful letters in past issues.

Cedar Lake, Indiana chapter is concentrating on special First Saturday pro-life Masses and Sacrament of Reconciliation followed by prayer vigil and rosary at the abortion mill.

There might be a change of days at the abortion mill for the rosary. Please call Carolyn Kenning for more information at 219-374-5193

Gerri Cuccari and Carolyn Kenning will be at the Mir Conference, September 16-18. We will have CoR table at the Conference so be sure to stop by and see us! - K.S.

FINKEL WATCH

Brian Finkel, abortionist in Phoenix, doesn't like Planned Parenthood (PP) anymore! His greed was exposed in an article in The Arizona Republic, 725/95. William Cheshire, senior editorial columnist for the paper reported, "Dr. Brian Finkel, probably Arizona's premier abortionist, points out that under Title X funding, PP of Central and Northern Arizona got $819,512 last year. "This," he says "gives them an unparalleled advantage with competing with the private sector for insured patients. Federal aid for pregnancy counseling may have been needed at one time," he says, "but PP is now a mainstream provider, buying birth control pills at a discounted price of about 35 cents per 50 and selling them to indigent women for $13 - a mark-up of close to 4,000 percent."

Finkel doesn't speak of women's rights, or of being of service to "desperate" women. He is complaining that PP is making more money killing babies than he makes, working six days a week.

Reports are coming in that he is also moonlighting at other abortion mills. We told you long ago women won't go to an abortionist who totes three or four guns. He probably has killed his own business as well as killed thousands of babies.

His dream was money but his nightmare might be himself. - K.S.

VICTORY AGAINST FACE

Not surprisingly, the media did not report a wonderful victory for Nick Nikis from American Center For Law and Justice. July 19, 1995 the District Count of Eastern California decided in the favor of his client, Steven McCallister; Judge Edward Garcia decided in favor of the pro-lifer.

The case was brought by Desiree Kelsey, an abortion-bound client who charged the pro-life sidewalk counsellor, Steven McCallister, under the Freedom of Access of Clinic Entrances (F.A.C.E.).

American Center For Law and Justice represents Children of the Rosary and it is responsible for our victories in the Phoenix Bubble Ordinance, Paradise Valley and problems placed before the city of Glendale, AZ. Nick has moved on to private practice. We will miss him and once again thank Ben Bull and Nick Nikis for their dedication for the defense of life. - K.S.

JACKSON ON DOWNHILL RUN

A man who has misled many black people about the issue of abortion seems to be losing ground. He has lost support among people he had formerly relied on for support. Jesse Jackson, addressing the National Baptist Sunday Church School and Baptist Training Union Congress was considered a flop by many of the 20.000 members attending the event. The Arizona Republic reported on June 16, 1995 that when Jackson pleaded for $500 contributions from the members no one responded. He again pleaded for money and "lowered his request to $100, and a handful of women stood up. He kept decreasing the amount until, finally, he instructed the ushers to take up a collection."

Apparently Jackson has lost much of his credibility. One clear sign was an usher's opinion in the article that "although she appreciated and respected Jackson, she would have preferred spending time with her Baptist brothers and sisters in fellowship than listening to his speech. She also said that many of the youth at the conference weren't thrilled by his appearance, either."

Jackson is proving that the liberal, pro-abortion leadership will stoop to the lowest levels to gain support. In a speech on June 20, 1995, he certainly showed his lack of respect for Our Lord and sacred scripture in the following statement: "Jesus was an at-risk baby, born on the edge. He was rejected by the regents of his day because He fit no qualifications of His day, son of a teenage mother, brought up by an unemployed carpenter. He said one day, 'Rome, I don't care how strong Rome is. I don't care what the vote power may be. There's no homeless birds. They got a nest and there's no homeless foxes, they got a hole. The Son of Man's got no place to lay His head.' I feel the pain. I tell you... Jesus supported affirmative action."

The good news is Jackson's desperate antics help the pro-life movement. If he can't be creditable in the Baptist bible belt, how can he be creditable in the argument that abortion is a woman's right. We must continue to expose his deliberate moves to use issues for his own purposes. - Katherine Sabelko

CAMERA LENS REFLECTS CONFLICT

By Sue Widemark

A recent Charles Perez talk show featured teenage guests who had either had babies or wanted them. Among them was Dandy, a 13-year-old new mother with a 15-year-old boyfriend, Jessica, her 17-year-old sister, who had had a miscarriage. Another 17-year-old woman, who wanted a baby, was also on the panel. She gave several lame excuses before admitting that she wanted a baby because her "first baby had been taken away from me because my parents had forced me to have an abortion."

Perez stacked the panel and the audience with people who loudly insulted these kids. For example, he interviewed two mothers on who had had babies during their teenage years and they complained loudly about how horrible it was to be saddled with kids. And finally, he egged the audience on in insulting and berating the kids on the panel. The 13-year-old was told several times that she was too immature to have a baby and her boyfriend, who has a job and supports the baby, was jeered because his pay is minimum wage.

The bottom line of the show was that teenagers should not have babies. But, nothing was said about abstaining from sex outside of marriage. Nothing was said about what they should do if they DO get pregnant.

To the 13-year-old's credit, she finally spoke up. The maturity of Dandy exceeded that of the audience when she said, "I did get pregnant and I was NOT going to KILL my baby." The audience had no response.

The Perez show dealt with sex outside of marriage. Tomorrow's show deals with one-night stands and how they would like to have more sex outside of marriage. In fact, MOST of Perez' shows condone or actually encourage sex outside of marriage. And I have news for Mr. Perez. Sex causes babies. Every time. So who is HE, of all people, to crucify some youngsters because they reacted responsibly to the life-style HE encourages, indeed from which HE makes beaucoup bucks. Shame on him!

It was stressed on the show that all these kids should finish high school, go to college and "have a career," THEN have a child so they could "give that child a good life", as Perez phrased it.

Since when does a career mother give a child a good life? Since when do material things make up for the mother's presence by the child's side? Take a look at messed up kids, Perez and you may see far more of them from career parents, who give them financial benefits but neglect them mercilessly, than from poverty-stricken parents who are there for their kids when they need it. Kids don't care where they live - I can attest to that - but they sure DO care about having their parents around. If a mother MUST work, that's one thing. But, oh, please, don't tell me that a working mother is the best arrangement for the kids!

I keep thinking of how our Holy Father called our society, one of death. A society which wallows in sex and yet - advocates slaughtering unborn infants resulting from that sex. A society which says that anything is preferable to giving of ourselves to take care of a child. A society which does not understand how holding an infant in one's arms is the most glorious feeling one can have.

The truth is that the attitude of the teens on the panel put the death-advocating audience (and Perez) to shame. If Perez wants the teens to wait, why not do a show on celibacy? Why not cancel the shows advocating sex outside of marriage? Abortion does not stop teen pregnancy. Neither do condoms (they are often forgotten and and all to often fail even when used). Indeed, the only thing which would put a damper on teen pregnancy is celibacy and this is one subject they avoid like the plague.

BITS AND PIECES

Puerto Rico: Two abortion mills fight closure. After the Puerto Rican Health Secretary, Carmen Feliciano de Melecio, asked the Justice Department to shut down two clinics for violating health standards, the clinics decided to fight back by maintaining services. It took the Justice Department to actually close the clinics. Both clinics will sue, saying their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process were violated. In a statement, Pro-Reproductive Rights claimed that the Health Dept. is harder on clinics than on other health facilities. The Juan and Bayamon clinics violated laws tied to operation and maintenance of health facilities, not for moral reasons, claimed Feliciano. There will be a hearing on July 31. (from American Life League, Abortion Report 7/24/95)

Reproductive Services, an abortion mill in Corpus Christi, TX., has closed, claiming financial causes. Sgt. Ruben Radaro Rodriguez (NFOFL & LifeForce, Pro-life Police) reported that this mill was destroyed by arson in 1993. The cause of the fire was declared by Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms officials - (ATF). Reproductive Services had reopened but complained that there were always sidewalk counsellors present, with prayer vigils and rosaries taking place outside the building. Sgt. Ruben Radaro Rodriguez signed his information as "Sworn to Protect Life... Keep abortion protests safe and legal!"

Pro-life legislation is moving through the House of Representatives. It cuts back federal funding of fetal experimentation, abortions and money going to "family-planning clinics."

The U.S. Senate, (8/3/95) voted 50 to 44 to deny tax-payer money to fund abortions for federal workers, except for rape, incest or life of the mother.

Oregon loses a court case and life is victorious. The 1994 vote in Oregon to support doctor-assisted suicide was struck down by a federal court, declaring it was unconstitutional and prejudiced against the terminally-ill population.

Planned Parenthood (PP) not interested in health care. PP board of directors ousted Pamila Maraldo as president. Remember, she was the one who said she was Catholic? PP didn't like her plan of expanding PP into general health clinics. They stated they are mainly interested in abortions and women's reproductive rights. In English, that's spelled "m-o-n-e-y."

More companies off boycott list! Life Decisions International has confirmed that General Mills has sold China Coast, Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurants. Johnson Controls has also been taken off the boycott list! For a detailed report, send a $25 donation to Life Decisions International, P.O. Box 419, Amherst, NY, 14226-0419. They do a wonderful job and are in need of funds. They produce a short bi-monthly newsletter which is excellent.

Saturday morning action takes place all over the country. Please check the list of abortion mills we pray at six days a week! We need you there!

Trucks, cars and fire engines are in the act! As we pray outside the abortion mills, we are blessed by the beeping of horns from vehicles driving by. We encourage you to keep it up. Every time the abortion clinic is blasted by pro-life sounds, they remind the abortionist inside that we will never quit fighting to end the slaughter of the innocent! And consider stopping and joining us in prayer!

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE! WE ASK YOU TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

Our donations come only from you. No group or organization subsidize us. If we are to continue our events, such as prayer vigils and rosaries, money is needed to advertise and hold the event. We continually see a very positive reaction through our publication. This is where you receive the latest news via the Newsletters and Newsgrams. More costs are incurred with the essentials, such as telephone costs, electricity, computer maintenance and programs, postage, copier cost, paper, pro-life literature, walkie-takies, batteries, advertising, office supplies, and more.

We are totally volunteer with no paid employees. We have been good stewards of the tax deductible funds donated, but, sadly, we realize that we need your financial support now.

We have not used a special mailing or a full page for this plea because we know you understand how important every page of information is that you receive in the Newsletter. Just for the printing of this single issue cost $1,000. Postage is $400. We now are using a private loan to pay these bills. We need your help!

Please pray over the decision to donate. Hopefully you will then fill out the form below and send it back in the enclosed envelope. You automatically receive, as our "thank you," a Newsgram for each five dollars donated.

Pro-life Representatives at Parishes in Arizona

October will be here before we know it. The first Sunday of October has been set aside for special attention to pro-life issues, especially the issue of abortion. Every parish receives a pro-life packet from the Diocese to aid the parish in planning for this special Sunday. We would like to offer our help to parishes throughout Arizona for this Sunday also.

We encourage all pro-life coordinators to sign up with us for a "pro-life table." We will have supplies, newsletters, roses, rosaries, pro-life literature and more available.

Last year, the first year of the project, was a tremendous success. We were able to be of assistance to 19 parishes. Some parishes chose a different Sunday in October due to previously scheduled activities. Whatever your parish's schedule is, you need to call as soon as possible and "reserve" your kit.

This year we have already purchased some leaflets and pamphlets which handles the life issues in a wonderful, gentle way. Please notify your parish's pro-life representatives so they can begin their planning now!

ABOUT THE NEWSGRAM

Children of the Rosary publishes 16 issues a year. The Newsletter is published quarterly and sent to those people on our mailing list. There is no cost for the quarterly Newsletter but donations are always needed and greatly appreciated.

As a way of thanking our contributors, we send out a monthly publication, called the Newsgram. Originally, the word "gram" identified it as a very short update of pro-life news. As the years have gone by, it has developed into a full 8-12 page issue.

If you are wondering how you can receive the monthly Newsgram, we will have to say you can't subscribe to it. The only way you can receive the Newsgram each month is with your donation to CoR.

You see, for each five dollars you donate to the cause to fight abortion, you will receive a Newsgram. So, if you send in twenty dollars for our totally voluntary, nonprofit group, you will receive a Newsgram for four months - one month for each five dollars you send.

It is rather difficult to borrow a copy of a Newsgram. Most people who receive it just don't want their only copy out of their hands. The best way to ensure you get the last-minute pro-life news, locally and nationally, is to give from your heart - to save another heart - the heart of a small baby who will be saved through the work of us all.

God bless all of you who donate - without your generosity, this publication could not be printed and distributed. If you would like to send us a donation, mail your tax deductable contribution to Children of the Rosary, P.O. Box 2021. Glendale, AZ, 85311-2021.
